Shutter Box Restoration
Often seen as an ornamental feature of a room's window in today's period residences, shutter boxes actually had a functional use in their day. When shutter doors are functioning properly they provide two functions: (1) is to maintain heat in a room when closed over for the night (as wood will always give a better U-value than glass), and (2) is to provide security. The period designers of the Victorian and Georgian eras enjoyed large windows in rooms that had large fireplaces to heat them. So tall were the windows of the time that in some cases a full grown man could almost hide inside the shutter box alcove! Shutter doors were easier to use than tall curtains and required virtually no cleaning or maintenance at the time.
At David Dunne Carpentry, we manufacture and install shutter boxes to any pattern or design and can also expertly repair existing shutter boxes and doors.
